Got an update from Ian. Boo's liver enzymes especially the ggt are high. He's getting a medication brought home.

According to Google:

GGT is also important in nitrogen metabolism and is found within liver cells. High levels indicate bile duct obstruction, liver disease, pancreatitis, Cushing’s and can be caused by high levels of steroids. Low levels indicate starvation and malnutrition.

We can rule out steroids and the sentence about low levels. Vet didn't mention pancreatitis (something Ian and I have experience with Pywhackett nearly died with it and our Joey died in the hospital getting treated for it when a brain tumor was discovered when he had seizures).

The medicine is to rule out infection and we're waiting to hear from the radiologist. He's here with us and we're hoping it's just an infection.

I woke up with a headache and my day got worse from there.

Boo cat, aka Mushi, my fifteen year old cat that I've had for the longest even though Jasper is much older. Had two poops in a row, where he vomited at the same time and the poops had blood in them.

We called the vet as soon as they opened but it was his surgery day, so they scheduled us for noon. We put Boo in the carrier and then about 20 minutes into the 45 minute drive get a text that the surgery is running late so... We have an appointment at 2:30.

So now I'm playing the waiting game. I didn't go with because my headache is getting worse and Mushi will scream the whole damn time.

Trying not to dwell on all the awful things it could be when it's very likely that he just has a bug or had constipation and hurt himself.

He had good numbers in December.

Last week it was warm but now it's cold again but tomorrow it'll be warm.

I know I had other things I wanted to type about but... I am anxious.

Help me pick my next* build! (*Well, I have the Destiny Astray to finish, whatever I'm making for 30ML Day, the other contest, and possibly some other small decompression builds. Which is fine, it means I can leave this poll open for a bit.)

These kits are all not Gundams, nor are they made by Bandai. There's a frustrating habit in the hobby, both by the folks who build the kits and the folks selling them, to lump all these kits under "Third Party", "Indie Plamo", or just "ChinaPla" even though not all of the makers are Chinese. I haven't decided on a preferred term, but I'm leaning towards just listing the maker or if I need to refer to a larger whole, "Other Kits" or "Non-Bandai".

It's the Independence Day of my country again. (It is also the fourth anniversary of the war in Ukraine.)

I've done the "looking at a flag at 7:32 when I could sleep in instead" thing that is my favorite of the Independence Day traditions, so now it's time for my second favorite, the yearly patriotismposting.

I've linked my favorite music these past years. This year I thought about poetry. Therefore:
"the quiet sonnet" by Julius Juurmaa, one of my favorite poems, translated by yours truly
six poems by Marie Under, one of my country's poetry titans of the 20th century, according to the comments translated by W Matthews

(It somehow feels very appropriate that the latter post has both "Ecstasy", which is even hornier in the original*, and "Christmas Greetings 1941", which is heartbreaking. The duality of the 20th century.)

(* please imagine being a teenager in high school, where the literature classes cover the country's lit in roughly chronological order. A lot of the local poetry so far has been variations of "nature is pretty great", "Jesus is also pretty great" and "liberty would be pretty great, if we had any". Then Marie Under comes in with a steel chair of "I have sex and it's great". A lasting impression, that.)

an asideI also... keep thinking about the way patriotism feels so different in English and my native language. I tend to float in sort of left-leaning contexts in Anglophone internet, and those are often allergic to nationalism for very obvious reasons. Which aren't even wrong. And yet, it means that in English I worry about sounding like one of those worrisome nationalists when I'm talking about patriotism.

To quote Orwell, "By ‘patriotism’ I mean devotion to a particular place and a particular way of life, which one believes to be the best in the world but has no wish to force on other people. Patriotism is of its nature defensive, both militarily and culturally. Nationalism, on the other hand, is inseparable from the desire for power."

This definition of patriotism is what I feel about my country and my language and my way of life. I think they're pretty great (even if could probably be improved, such is the nature of anything). I don't think they're reserved to some closed in-group that one must be born in. I also don't think everyone should think they're pretty great exactly the way I do.

Happy birthday, country. You're imperfect, but my favorite.

ft the original, my translation, and some notes

tasane sonett
november
     koit
       on ülal karge udu
ja õhus sõnu värskeid, mullaseid
vaid tuulevaikus varjab linnaradu
kui lehti jälitab kuldkollaseid

vist ainus hääbuv heli sel akordil
on hõbevalge varjukuju-kuu
nii oma tõelusele loodud tornil
kuukiirte selges säras
          varjutu

ma igapäevakangast kootud katust
veel paikama pean unistustega
veel vaevu hoides vaos kannatamatust
et naasta tuppa päiksetõusuga

ja jälle röövida Sind une sülest
ma vaatan maha
        Sina vaatad üles

the quiet sonnet
november. dawn. there's a chill mist above
and some fresh still earthy words in the air
only the lull of wind is cloaking the city streets
as it pursues the golden leaves

perhaps the only fading sound of this chord
is the silverwhite silhouette of the moon
standing on the tower of its own realness
in the clear light of the moon, shadowless

the roof made of cloth-of-everyday
still needs to be patched with dreams
I am barely containing my impatience
to come back inside with the sunrise

and to rob you from the arms of sleep
I look down. You are looking up

Translator's notes:
  • The original is a formally perfect Shakespearean sonnet (iambic pentameter, ABAB CDCD EFEF GG rhyme scheme). I forced three lines of my translation into iambic pentameter, looked at the atrocity I had wrought and decided to Not.
  • Third stanza: the narrator is actually patching the roof in the original, not just noting it needs done. I couldn't get that to work while keeping the "cloth-of-everyday/dreams" bit in the right order.
  • Final line: it reads slightly ambiguous to me in the original, because the direction of the narrator's gaze can be translated as both "I look down" and "I look at the ground" (the addressee is looking up sans complications). Do their eyes actually meet? I don't know, and I have been thinking about this question for nearly two decades at this point.

The author, Julius Juurmaa, has published one poetry collection ("Kuidas joonistada küsimust"/How to Draw a Question, in 2010, my short review is at the end of this 2023 post), plus some poetry in literary magazines here and there. He is having a fruitful non-literary career according to DuckDuckGo. If my memory is correct, this particular poem was first published in the long-defunct magazine Muusa way back in 2008. But I may be wrong.

24. What are you watching this month that you are enjoying?

I'm watching Will Trent and High Potential on Hulu. And the Rookie. Hulu has a lot of series. They also have movies that we watch now and then.

We watched a movie on HBO called Dead of Winter. If it were any slower, it would have been going backwards. Mind you, we watched the entire thing, but I got so cold watching. It was filmed in Minnesota during winter. I'm originally from Iowa, and I left because it was too cold, and I never looked back. Anyhow, back to the movie, it had Emma Thompson in it. As always, she was excellent. I didn't care for the ending, but life is like that.

Is anyone watching Dark Winds? We love it. It only has 8 episodes for this season. That's not enough. Will Trent will have 18 episodes. That's more like it. Does anyone have any Dark Wind icons? I only have this one? I would love one with Joe (Zahn)

14. What challenges have you overcome in the past? How has doing so made your life more vibrant and full?

When I was 28, I stopped drinking completely. I'm an alcoholic, and it was time. I finally stopped for me, my hubby and our children. I've never done anything that hard as stopping. It wasn't all easy as pie. It was hard work, but I'm happy to be where I am in life. Sober and thrilled with life. I'm blessed.

Enough about that. Too heavy for this time at night. Have a good Tuesday.

How to Improve My Life:

I know this will sound weird, but I'm happy with my life. I don't know that I would change anything. I'm happy, content and thrilled to be alive. Great family and friends. Like I said, I'm happy. Would I be happier if I had more money? I have no idea. Some people that have money are sad and alone. I'd rather stay the way I am.

How about you?

What role does love play in your life?

Love is big in our family. Hubby and I still find time to spend together and have fun. We love our family and friends too. We share everything. Okay, not everything. I tell him about a story I'm working on, and he says he doesn't want to hear it. He knows I write slash, but he doesn't want to hear about it. LOL. He's so cute. I truly love him and his quirky ways. 😁

23. Do you own many mirrors?

One in each bathroom, one in the spare bedroom, and one in our bedroom. I don't like the way I look; they aren't my good friends. If I lost 50 pounds, I wouldn't mind looking in a mirror every day. I'm doing chair aerobics every night, but it's coming off very slowly. I always get sidetracked and end up talking about something that has nothing to do with the question. Sorry about that. My dad used to call me Rambling Rose. Now you know why.

* 1 cup of granulated sugar
* 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
* 1/4 cup of melted butter
* 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon
* 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar

Instructions

Preheat the Oven and Prepare the Baking Dish
* Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to ensure the casserole does not stick.
First Layer of Crescent Roll Dough
* Unroll one can of crescent roll dough and spread it evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Press the seams together to create a uniform layer.
Prepare the Cream Cheese Filling
* In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese together with 1 cup of granulated sugar and the vanilla extract. Mix until the ingredients are smooth and well combined.
Spread the Cream Cheese Mixture
* Evenly distribute the cream cheese mixture over the layer of crescent roll dough in the baking dish, ensuring a consistent layer.
Second Layer of Crescent Roll Dough
* Unroll the second can of crescent roll dough and carefully place it over the cream cheese layer. Press the seams together to create a smooth top layer.
Apply the Butter and Cinnamon-Sugar Mixture
* Brush the melted butter evenly over the top layer of crescent roll dough. In a small bowl, combine the ground cinnamon and the remaining 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar. Sprinkle this mixture generously over the buttered dough.
Bake the Casserole
* Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes, or until the top is crisp and golden brown.
Cool and Serve
* Allow the casserole to cool for at least 20 minutes before slicing it into squares and serving. Optionally, drizzle with honey for added sweetness.

Cheesy baked asparagus

🥦 RECIPE: Cheesy Baked Asparagus 🧀
Based on the text provided, here is the complete recipe for this simple, elegant side dish. Since the text mentions only 6 ingredients and a "creamy cheese sauce" effect, this recipe uses a combination of melting cheeses and garlic to create that rich coating without a heavy flour-based sauce.

🛒 Ingredients
The Asparagus

1½ lbs (680g) Fresh asparagus, woody ends snapped off

2 tbsp Olive oil

Salt & Black pepper, to taste

The Cheesy Topping

1 cup Shredded Mozzarella cheese (for the creamy melt)

½ cup Grated Parmesan cheese (for the sharp, savory flavor)

2 cloves Garlic, minced (or ½ tsp garlic powder)

Optional: Red pepper flakes or lemon zest for a kick

👩‍🍳 Instructions
Preheat & Prep: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Lightly grease a baking sheet or baking dish.

Prep Tip: To remove the woody ends, bend the thick end of the asparagus spear until it naturally snaps off. Discard the tough bottom part.

Season: Place the asparagus on the baking sheet.

Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Toss with your hands to coat evenly, then arrange them in a single layer.

Roast: Bake for 10–15 minutes, depending on the thickness of the spears.

They should be tender-crisp (pierced easily with a fork but not mushy).

The Cheesy Finish: Remove from the oven.

Sprinkle the minced garlic, Mozzarella, and Parmesan evenly over the stalks.

Melt: Return to the oven (or switch to Broil) for 3–5 minutes.

Watch closely! You want the cheese bubbly and golden brown, but not burnt.

Serve: Serve immediately while the cheese is gooey.
