Summary: Frog & Toad try to beat the heat.

Toad and Frog sat on a rock.

“What a hot day!” said Frog.

“Yes,” said Toad. “This is the hottest day of summer. What can we do to cool off?”

“Let’s go for ice cream,” said Frog.

“I feel cooler,” said Frog as he licked his ice cream cone.

“So do I,” said Toad as he licked his. “Vanilla is the best ice cream.”

“No,” said Frog. “Chocolate is the best.”

When Frog and Toad finished arguing, they looked down at the two puddles at their feet. One was a vanilla, one was chocolate. All their ice cream had melted and dripped out and they were left with two empty cones!

“I’m still hot,” said Frog.

“Me, too,” said Toad. “And sticky.”

“Why don’t we go for a swim?” said Frog.

“I’m not going to wear my bathing suit,” said Toad.

“Good idea,” said Frog.

Frog made big splashes in the river. Toad made smaller splashes.

“I’m cooling off!” said Toad

“Me, too!” said Frog. “Let’s race up the middle of the river.”

“Ready, set, go!” said Frog.

Frog swam fast. Toad swam slowly.

After a while, Toad was tired and stopped swimming.

“AAAH!” said Toad as the current carried him away from Frog.

Frog stopped swimming and turned. “Toad!”

The current swept Frog away, too. He swam with the current to catch up to Toad.

“Toad!”

“Frog!”

They hugged each other.

“Let’s swim for the bank!” said Frog.

“Yes!” said Toad.

When they reached the bank, Frog and Toad were very tired.

“It’s still hot,” said Toad. “But I don’t want to swim anymore.”

“I have an idea,” said Frog.

“This is perfect!” said Toad. “Even better than ice cream.”

“Yes!” said Frog. “Wallowing in mud is the best way to cool off on a hot summer’s day.”
